#195 Reclaiming Innocence by Embracing the Golden Rule With Rev. Carol Saunders

Rev. Carol Saunders bio:

For those who are curious, here is a brief synopsis of who I am. Like many life roads, mine has been one of interesting turns, ultimately bringing me to today. My educational background is in engineering. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and worked for 20 years in the energy business in Houston, Texas. I always admired the perfection of mathematics and the discovery of science, but the engineering field didn’t entirely suit me. As a young adult I found myself exploring all sorts of interesting endeavors on my own and eventually awakened to the Unity movement in 1997.

I am a Licensed Unity teacher, an ordained Interfaith minister and ordained Unity minister. After founding and leading a church for seven years, Spirit guided me to create something completely new. Together with those who were journeying with me, we boldly threw out the church model and focused on creating an alternative to church that included the message, the world and God in the midst. That was the start of The Spiritual Forum. In 134 episodes covering a broad spectrum of spiritual topics, we brought our authentic dialogue on spiritual living to the world via podcast.

Guided again by Spirit in 2021, I shifted The Spiritual Forum to a new format — conversations on spiritual living with guests. These are interesting conversations about personal experiences of the Divine, transformation and healing (including shadow work), the spiritual nature of world events, Ahimsa, and the great awakening of humanity from layers of programming and cultural conditioning. Ultimately, I hope they inspire people to seek/continue their own healing/awakening path and bring hope to the world. Also in 2021, I began leading an annual Whole Planet Spirituality Forum & Retreat at Unity Village.

On the personal side, I have been married to my husband, Greg Harbaugh, since 1981 and together we have three adult daughters. Greg is a former NASA shuttle astronaut which provided our family so many interesting life experiences. He has supported me fully in every one of my life endeavors, from getting my pilot’s license to bringing home puppies and stray cats/kittens to starting new ministries. We enjoy our home and property in rural Wisconsin, particularly the ever changing wildlife and our menagerie of dogs and cats. I also have a blog site – wolfandthelamb.com – to awaken the spiritually minded to include ALL sentient beings in our circle of Compassion.

As a minister and co-creator with Spirit, I have experienced the joy of authentic creativity and the honor of making a profound difference in people’s lives. I have learned to love and forgive myself, to trust Spirit, and to look for the Good always as I venture toward the complete unfoldment of my humanity and divinity.

In this unique episode featuring Rev. Carol Saunders, we delve into the topic of dismantling the cultural influences that can sometimes alienate us from our inherent innocence. We explore the path to reclaiming this innocence by embracing the practice of the golden rule: treating others as we would like to be treated. Carol explains that by embracing this principle, we can discover the art of transforming all energy into love.

#192 Children and Eternal Love and Life With Marie Antoinette Kelley

Marie Antoinette Kelley is an award-winning artist who has done hundreds of commissioned portraits, as well as the art for the Angel Quest Oracle. She has appeared on dozens of TV, radio, and podcast shows, and has been published in such magazines as Edge and Authority. In 2019, her bison portrait in the form of woven blankets began selling throughout Yellowstone National Park's general stores. To find out more about Marie Antoinette Kelley and her artwork, visit her website at makfineart.com

Note from Marie:

Since I was a young child, I've worried about death. When I was around ten, there was a poem pasted on the bathroom wall that said "Never leave without a greeting, never leave without a kiss, he who goes to meet his fate, doesn't know whom he will miss."

That poem was meant as an inspiration to live life to the fullest. But in my child's mind, it fueled an irrational fear of death-a black hole that gobbles people up.

As I grew older, I learned to deal with the inevitability of death. But my real breakthrough came when I discovered firsthand accounts from people that had experienced death and found it is not the end of our lives.

One such account is the story of Dannion Brinkley. He wrote a book about his near-death experience (NDE), called Saved by the Light, which became an international bestseller. It's a riveting story that shows that we, like energy, are not destroyed by death. Rather, we change over to a different state of living, one of light, love, and consciousness.

While Dannion was the first to give me this new perspective, he is definitely not the only person who has died and returned with an interesting story that proves we live on. I noticed that all these stories have certain common truths. I also noticed there were no books out there for children that share these truths,

Dannion has since become my friend, and his story is the main inspiration behind Danny's story. But as I wrote his experience in a child-friendly way, I made sure to highlight the elements that are true for all people's NDEs.

As a mother, and now a new grandmother, I feel it's an important piece of the puzzle to give to our children as they grow and learn to face our world-that death is not the end. It's a doorway. And it's actually nothing to be afraid of. While we all eventually need to leave behind our physical body and possessions, we will never lose whom or what we love.

In the latest episode, I engage in a discussion with Marie, focusing on her recently published children's book that delves into the near death experience of a young boy, Danny. With eloquence, Marie vividly portrays the profound and transformative effects of such encounters, offering valuable insights for embracing life with a heart full of openness and love. Marie's beautiful creation serves as a tool to initiate dialogues with children about mortality, as well as to explore the question of what happens to us after we die.

#188 Part 2: Children’s Near Death Experiences with Dr. Melvin Morse

Dr. Melvin Morse on Interviews With Innocence

Dr. Melvin Morse, M.D. is a graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine and a recipient of the National Service Research Award. He is a recognized authority in the field of near-death studies and has researched near-death experiences in children for eight years. As a medical student, Dr. Morse always pursued his interests in consciousness research. During a neurology rotation at Johns Hopkins, he worked under the legendary Vernon Montcastle and cared for patients who had half their brains removed or split-brain surgery. He assessed the effects such surgery had on consciousness, his first understanding that consciousness does not depend on brain function. He attended lectures by the early pioneers of functional neurogenesis. This is the revolutionary concept that all thoughts and experiences change our brain and our brain is capable of repairing itself.

After an internship at the University of California at San Francisco and a residency in Pediatrics at Seattle Children’s Hospital, he was in private practice of Pediatrics for over twenty years caring for three generations of patients. He retired in 2006 to concentrate on his consciousness research. He was a Professor of Pediatrics at both the University of Washington and the John Bastyr Naturopathic College.

Dr. Melvin Morse has come to understand that by learning the neuroscience of the brain, we can rediscover ancient wisdom long forgotten by the dogmas of religion. After learning about his work, I read his book "Closer To Light", which opened my eyes to the spirituality of children and the reality of near-death experiences, God and eternal life. Listen to learn how Dr. Melvin Morse was transformed from a spiritual skeptic into a real evangelist of the misunderstood world of near-death experiences.

I define a ritual as a sacred space or ceremony where joys, fears, and feelings are shared, validated, and embraced using spiritual tools to open the heart and create a sense of belonging, connection, and feeling heard, understood, and loved. A ritual is a celebration of our spiritual lives. Rituals are intended to resonate deeply with the participants, bringing strength and love to carry through life, particularly during challenging times. Used within a family, a ritual can create a sacred and enduring bond.

#179 Part 2: The Spiritual Lives of Children With Kate Adams

Kate Adams PhD is an internationally recognized researcher of children’s spirituality. She spent a decade teaching children, where she was deeply inspired by the insights they shared. Their narratives led her to a path of discovery about children’s spiritual worlds, initially through her PhD, which delved into children’s dreams in sleep which they believed had a divine connection. She has explored a range of spiritual aspects of young people’s lives, and her current project focuses on adults’ memories of their childhood imaginary/invisible friends. Throughout her studies, children have often explained that their spiritual experiences and wonderings are regularly dismissed as imagination, or simply ignored. Kate’s work gives voice to them, to help adults understand young people’s inner worlds and appreciate the wisdom they offer us.

Kate is a Professor of Education in the UK and has published widely on the subject for over two decades through research papers, articles, and books including Unseen Worlds: Looking through the lens of childhood, and The Spiritual Dimension of Childhood. She has served on the Board of Directors for the International Association for the Study of Dreams and as Co-Chair of the International Association for Children’s Spirituality. Kate regularly gives talks on her research around the world, for a range of audiences, all with the aim of bringing children’s experiences into the light.

In this episode, Kate and I engage in a delightful discussion regarding her captivating research on the spiritual experiences of children and the valuable insights that can be gained from their perspectives.

#177 Connecting with Animals: A Holistic Approach to Animal Care with Rommie Buhler

Rommie is passionate about animal welfare and is driven to change the perceptions around how we can communicate with them so they can be more consciously looked after. Most people that have animals in their care, while very connected to them, are only seeing part of their health and wellbeing picture. Mostly through what they observe, what they think and the things they may already know, but when you communicate from a higher perspective and you have a conversation with them, you are able to see the whole picture. That means, you are able to support them in a way “they” need, not in a way we think they need as you see the truth behind behaviours, psychological and physical problems. She works globally, but lives on the east coast of Australia as an Animal Communicator, Missing Animals Investigator, Medical Intuitive and Animal Energy Healer. Rommie also runs online and in person courses in Animal Communication, Missing Animals Investigation and Intuitive Development. She is also the TV Show Host of the web TV show, the ANIMALS’ TELEVISION show. A show designed to be educational, inspiring and entertaining to help the welfare of all animals domestic and wild. The Executive Producer of one of Australia’s premier FM Breakfast Radio stations has described her as “too normal”. She’s pragmatic, no nonsense and logical and has been told many times, “you don’t look like an intuitive”. She takes that as a compliment! Challenging the stigma associated with that innate ability we are born with--Intuition, is a constant part of Rommie's conversation. Rommie has been trained with some of the top psychic mediums, controlled remote viewers and intuitive detectives around: Tony Stockwell, Pam Coronado, James Van Praagh and Amanda De Warren.

During this episode, Rommie shares with us her unique perspective on animal communication and how it can help us understand the whole picture of our pet’s well-being. We discuss the importance of connecting with an animal's true essence and how owners’ behaviors can affect their pet’s emotional welfare.

#176 The Magic of a Waldorf Education With Somer Serpe

Somer Serpe was born in the US but grew up overseas as the daughter of two international school educators. After returning to the US, she trained as an artist and as a teacher, earning her BFA degree at Parsons School of Design and her Masters in Waldorf Early Childhood Education at Sunbridge College. Somer taught Nursery and Kindergarten at the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School for 15 years before leading the Parent Child Program there. In 2020 she started her own program mentoring parents and teaching outdoor parent-child classes on the campuses of Hawthorne Valley School and Berkshire Waldorf School. Somer’s two daughters are Waldorf Graduates. Somer is the assistant program director and a faculty member at Sound Circle Center for Arts and Anthroposophy and is a Northeast Regional Representative for WECAN. She serves as a mentor for teachers and schools as well as an inspirational coach for parents. She leads workshops and parent education opportunities around the country. Somer enjoys skiing, biodynamic gardening, cooking, puppetry, singing, purposeful work with children and creating healing stories for children and parents.

During this episode, I have a lovely conversation with Somer Serpe regarding the Waldorf school's educational approach, which aims to develop essential qualities in children that encourage them to become resilient and compassionate individuals.
