#208 - Beyond The Veil: Children's Journeys Through Near-Death Experiences

In this profoundly enlightening episode of "Interviews with Innocence," we are honored to host Dr. P.M.H. Atwater, L.H.D., an internationally recognized authority on near-death experiences (NDEs). With a career spanning over 38 years, Dr. Atwater has dedicated her life to researching NDEs, fueled by her personal survival of three near-death episodes. Through her journey, she has authored 18 books, with “The Forever Angels: Near Death Experiences in Childhood and Their Lifelong Impact” being among her most recent and impactful works.

Dr. Atwater's extensive research, which includes interviewing over 5000 individuals from young children who have had NDEs to older adults reflecting on their lifelong impact, brings forth a compelling argument: the near-death experience is a profound consciousness transformation or “brain shift,” rather than an anomaly. This episode delves into how children, in particular, perceive and articulate their encounters with the divine, and how these experiences shape their understanding of life and existence.

Key Insights from Dr. P.M.H. Atwater:

  • Childhood NDEs: Children's interpretations of near-death experiences diverge significantly from adults'. They often report encountering three distinct lights, a fatherly figure, and various animals and birds, illuminating a unique perspective on the afterlife.

  • Communication Post-NDE: The importance of engaging with children on their level post-NDE to foster genuine and uninhibited conversations. Dr. Atwater emphasizes the significance of eye-level interaction to avoid influencing children to speak merely to please adults.

  • Challenges of Reintegration: The struggle many children face reintegrating into "real life" post-NDE, driven by a profound sense of not being understood and a yearning to return to the light they experienced.

  • Ongoing Life Stream: Dr. Atwater's research suggests that what we often conceptualize as the afterlife is, in fact, part of an ongoing life stream, challenging traditional perceptions of life and death.

  • Phenomena of Protection: An intriguing account of children in a devastating tornado in Missouri who were reportedly saved by "butterfly people," raising questions about angelic interventions.

  • Supporting Children with NDEs: The episode emphasizes the importance of allowing children to express their experiences freely through conversation, prayer, rituals, and the creation of personal altars or centerpieces.

  • Respecting Children's Truths: Acknowledging and honoring the truth in children's descriptions of their experiences without judgment, and the importance of letting children be children.

  • Personal Growth: Dr. Atwater shares her personal takeaway from her extensive research and experiences: a profound ease and trust in navigating life, even in the most daunting situations.

My educational background is in engineering. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and worked for 20 years in the energy business in Houston, Texas. I always admired the perfection of mathematics and the discovery of science, but the engineering field didn’t entirely suit me. As a young adult I found myself exploring all sorts of interesting endeavors on my own and eventually awakened to the Unity movement in 1997.

I am a Licensed Unity teacher, an ordained Interfaith minister and ordained Unity minister. After founding and leading a church for seven years, Spirit guided me to create something completely new. Together with those who were journeying with me, we boldly threw out the church model and focused on creating an alternative to church that included the message, the world and God in the midst. That was the start of The Spiritual Forum. In 134 episodes covering a broad spectrum of spiritual topics, we brought our authentic dialogue on spiritual living to the world via podcast.

Guided again by Spirit in 2021, I shifted The Spiritual Forum to a new format — conversations on spiritual living with guests. These are interesting conversations about personal experiences of the Divine, transformation and healing (including shadow work), the spiritual nature of world events, Ahimsa, and the great awakening of humanity from layers of programming and cultural conditioning. Ultimately, I hope they inspire people to seek/continue their own healing/awakening path and bring hope to the world. Also in 2021, I began leading an annual Whole Planet Spirituality Forum & Retreat at Unity Village.

On the personal side, I have been married to my husband, Greg Harbaugh, since 1981 and together we have three adult daughters. Greg is a former NASA shuttle astronaut which provided our family so many interesting life experiences. He has supported me fully in every one of my life endeavors, from getting my pilot’s license to bringing home puppies and stray cats/kittens to starting new ministries. We enjoy our home and property in rural Wisconsin, particularly the ever changing wildlife and our menagerie of dogs and cats. I also have a blog site – wolfandthelamb.com – to awaken the spiritually minded to include ALL sentient beings in our circle of Compassion.

As a minister and co-creator with Spirit, I have experienced the joy of authentic creativity and the honor of making a profound difference in people’s lives. I have learned to love and forgive myself, to trust Spirit, and to look for the Good always as I venture toward the complete unfoldment of my humanity and divinity.

In this unique episode featuring Rev. Carol Saunders, we delve into the topic of dismantling the cultural influences that can sometimes alienate us from our inherent innocence. We explore the path to reclaiming this innocence by embracing the practice of the golden rule: treating others as we would like to be treated. Carol explains that by embracing this principle, we can discover the art of transforming all energy into love.

#194 Enchanting Odyssey With PMH Atwater

PMH Blog.png

P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D. is one of the original researchers in the field of near-death studies, having begun her work in 1978.  She has written fifteen books on her findings - the last, "Near-Death Experiences: The Rest of the Story," a wrap-up of her near-death findings along with her theory about transformations of consciousness - covering 43 years of work both with near-death experiencers and those who had an intense spiritual transformation (covering nearly 7,000 child and adult experiencers).  Some of her findings in the near-death field have been verified in clinical studies, among them the prospective study done in Holland and published in Lancet Medical Journal, 12-15-01.  Her "The Big Book of Near-Death Experiences," brought the entire field of near-death studies uptodate worldwide, and was featured in an online version of Newsweek Magazine.  Her latest, Dying to Know You:  Proof of God in the Near-Death Experience, is a summary of experiencer voices speaking their word, their truth, what they learned.

In 2005, she was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the International Association For Near-Death Studies (IANDS), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists (NATH), as well as an honorary Ph.D. from a school in Sri Lanka.  In 2010, she was also awarded the Nancy E. Bush Award for Literary Excellence and the Lifetime Achievement and Special Services Award, both from IANDS.  She has presented her findings for many organizations and schools, including twice at the United Nations, and as a guest on such TV shows as Geraldo, Regis and Kathie Lee, Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael, and Entertainment Tonight.  Her books have been published in over 12 countries.

Also a generational researcher, she has completed “Children of the Fifth World:  A Guide to the Coming Changes in Human Consciousness (due out in Fall, 2012), “Beyond the Indigo Children," and “The New Children and Near-Death Experiences.  Her story as an experiencer of near-death states - I Died Three Times in 1977 - The Complete Story - is available at Amazon.com.  A prayer chaplin, visionary counselor, wife, mother, grandmother, her website is filled with many services and features, among them The Marketplace - where near-death experiencers and those like them can promote their products and services without any charge to them.  Her monthly newsletters are free to those who sign up on www.pmhatwater.com

In today's episode, I am thrilled to welcome the renowned PMH Atwater once again to the show, where she will discuss her latest book centered around her life story. In her eloquent narrative, PMH artfully weaves together her personal journey, abundant experiences, and their profound impact on her life. She also generously imparts the wisdom she has acquired through over four decades of diligent research, which encompasses an impressive corpus of more than 4,000 client sessions.

A vast majority (of NDEers) never lose their sense of home.”

”They really are different because their brains formed differently.”

”They’re bringing that knowledge and openness with them.

#192 Children and Eternal Love and Life With Marie Antoinette Kelley

Marie Antoinette Kelley is an award-winning artist who has done hundreds of commissioned portraits, as well as the art for the Angel Quest Oracle. She has appeared on dozens of TV, radio, and podcast shows, and has been published in such magazines as Edge and Authority. In 2019, her bison portrait in the form of woven blankets began selling throughout Yellowstone National Park's general stores. To find out more about Marie Antoinette Kelley and her artwork, visit her website at makfineart.com

Note from Marie:

Since I was a young child, I've worried about death. When I was around ten, there was a poem pasted on the bathroom wall that said "Never leave without a greeting, never leave without a kiss, he who goes to meet his fate, doesn't know whom he will miss."

That poem was meant as an inspiration to live life to the fullest. But in my child's mind, it fueled an irrational fear of death-a black hole that gobbles people up.

As I grew older, I learned to deal with the inevitability of death. But my real breakthrough came when I discovered firsthand accounts from people that had experienced death and found it is not the end of our lives.

One such account is the story of Dannion Brinkley. He wrote a book about his near-death experience (NDE), called Saved by the Light, which became an international bestseller. It's a riveting story that shows that we, like energy, are not destroyed by death. Rather, we change over to a different state of living, one of light, love, and consciousness.

While Dannion was the first to give me this new perspective, he is definitely not the only person who has died and returned with an interesting story that proves we live on. I noticed that all these stories have certain common truths. I also noticed there were no books out there for children that share these truths,

Dannion has since become my friend, and his story is the main inspiration behind Danny's story. But as I wrote his experience in a child-friendly way, I made sure to highlight the elements that are true for all people's NDEs.

As a mother, and now a new grandmother, I feel it's an important piece of the puzzle to give to our children as they grow and learn to face our world-that death is not the end. It's a doorway. And it's actually nothing to be afraid of. While we all eventually need to leave behind our physical body and possessions, we will never lose whom or what we love.

In the latest episode, I engage in a discussion with Marie, focusing on her recently published children's book that delves into the near death experience of a young boy, Danny. With eloquence, Marie vividly portrays the profound and transformative effects of such encounters, offering valuable insights for embracing life with a heart full of openness and love. Marie's beautiful creation serves as a tool to initiate dialogues with children about mortality, as well as to explore the question of what happens to us after we die.
